How to become a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)

To become a Quaker and a member of Newtown Monthly Meeting, you should notify the Meeting clerk of your desire to join the Religious Society of Friends.  Below are the details of the process:

1.      Write the clerk of Meeting (address below) about your interest in becoming a member.  This correspondence may be a detailed letter or simply a brief note explaining that you consider Newtown Friends Meeting to be your spiritual home and wish to participate fully in the community by becoming a member.

2.      The clerk informs the Meeting of your interest and refers your request to the Committee on Care and Counsel.

3.      The Committee on Care and Counsel arranges to have a clearness committee visit with you to discuss the nature of membership and the ways in which you can share in the work and service of the Society of Friends.  They will guide you in helping you decide whether you are ready to apply or should first become more familiar with the Religious Society of Friends.

4.      The Committee on Care and Counsel considers the feedback from the clearness committee and presents their recommendation to the monthly meeting for business.

5.      After approval by the monthly meeting, members of the Meeting arrange an occasion to welcome you into membership.

The process for application to membership may take two or three months before coming to the monthly meeting for worship and business for final approval.
